Organization
What does God say about the organization of His Church? In early church history elders were appointed in every church (Acts 14:21-24). Paul instructed Titus to appoint elders in every city (Titus 1:5). Elders are spoken of in the plural. We believe that biblical pattern requires each church to have a plurality of elders. We believe (1) elders have oversight of the affairs of each congregation, (2) each congregation is autonomous, and is responsible for its own affairs, and (3) each congregation is governed by elders when there are men who qualify as elders (1 Tim. 3:1-7 and Titus 1:5-9). We find no other system of governance in the early church after the death of the Apostles. Other names for elders are shepherds, bishops, overseers, presbyters, pastors. These men have responsibility for both leading and spiritual oversight of their respective congregations. Church members have a responsibility to submit to their leaders. Paul advised Timothy "The elders who direct the affairs of the church well are worthy of double honor, especially those whose work is preaching and teaching." - 1 Timothy 5:17 "Obey your leaders and submit to their authority. They keep watch over you as men who must give an account. Obey them so that their work will be a joy, not a burden, for that would be of no advantage to you." - Hebrews 13:17 Deacons were appointed in the early church. They are mentioned with elders (Phil 1:1) and their qualifications are given in 1 Tim 3:8. These men are servants, or ministers, and serve in areas as designated by the elders. They do not have governance responsibility. The Holly Lake congregation is served by eight elders, five deacons, and one preacher. It is the purpose of these men to serve the needs of people, both within and without the church.
